AN APPRENTICE GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of earning, learning and gaining work experience, as discovered by Rose Adams from Edgbaston. Rose went from strength to strength, whilst completing her apprenticeship at Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust (HoBtPCT) in partnership with Bournville College. She is now studying the Diploma in Adult Nursing at Birmingham City University.

When Rose left school at the age of 16, she considered different options. Having had a seasonal job whilst at school and being the type of person who likes to learn through practical experience, the choice was clear – an apprenticeship.  Rose applied for an apprenticeship vacancy as a Health Care Assistant at HoBtPCT.  She started her apprenticeship by undertaking NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Business Administration; then began NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Health and Social Care at Bournville College.

Rose said: ‘I always wanted to work with people but wasn’t sure about which role that would entail. Through the apprenticeship I found a new direction. If you are practical and like to learn through experience then an apprenticeship is for you. Don’t be fooled by its name though – you’ll still have to work hard to achieve your results.’

Half way through her apprenticeship Rose applied to Birmingham City University to study for the Diploma in Adult Nursing and was delighted to be offered a place. Further success followed when she secured a secondment to study through sponsorship from HoBtPCT.  Rose reflected: ‘I am now studying at Birmingham City University while still being employed by HoBtPCT. When I complete the course, I will have a job to return to.’

Alexis Whyte, Schools Liaison Coordinator, from HoBtPCT added: “We are delighted with Rose’s success; she is an excellent example of how apprenticeships work and what they can lead to. As part of her training programme Rose attended Bournville College who delivered an excellent training programme, with lots of support and encouragement. We look forward to welcoming Rose back in three years time and to continuing our working relationship with Bournville College.
