GEOFF LANDS A PROMOTION AT BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

An ex-MG Rover worker’s career has been going from strength to strength at Birmingham International Airport, thanks to his determination and management qualifications from Bournville College.

Geoff Brunt

Geoff Brunt (46) from Rednal worked at MG Rover for over 24 years. In 2005 just before its collapse, Geoff decided to leave MG Rover and found employment at Birmingham International Airport as a Building Services Technician. In 2007, his employer encouraged him to develop his skills and so he enrolled on the CMI Diploma in First Line Management Level 3 at Bournville College. The course has given Geoff much more than just new skills. Airport management could see Geoff’s potential and decided to promote him to Engineering Supervisor for Airport Terminals. Geoff reflected: ‘Leaving MG Rover after so long was a huge change but every cloud has a silver lining and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the last four years at the Airport. I’d like to thank my managers for seeing my potential and supporting my development which has led to some new exciting opportunities within the Company. ’

But Geoff’s determination didn’t stop there. He went on to study the CMI Diploma in Management and Leadership Level 5, again at Bournville College, which he completed in July 2009. Geoff was on a high when he received yet another promotion in December 2009; this time to become Terminal Maintenance Manager, being responsible for a team of 25. “My latest promotion is to support the current restructuring of the operations division and I’m really looking forward to being part of the new structure and working with new colleagues” , added Geoff.

Will Heynes, the Operations Director at Airport said: “Geoff has been an invaluable member of the engineering team and we’re pleased to see how his development with Bournville College has progressed. It’s an exciting time at the airport with a number of operational changes and with Geoff working on the management team, I’m confident the transition will be successful.”

‘Both CMI First Line Management Diploma and the CMI Leadership & Management Diploma are qualifications that have assisted Geoff unpack hidden skills and abilities to a level whereby Geoff has discovered a rejuvenated appetite and passion for even more knowledge’, added David Tunney, Curriculum Manager – Professional and Higher Education at Bournville College.
