The Screaming Jelly Baby.

The screaming Jelly Baby is a science experiment that is exciting and enjoyable, using the laws of science with a quirky twist.

Armed with just a Bunsen burner, potassium and a Jelly Baby, science is about to turn a jelly baby from a sugary, silent bairn into a screaming baby. Simon the science technician, happily showed us how it worked.

First of all Simon had to heat up the potassium within the test tube until it became a liquid. As you would imagine by this point, the potassium had become really hot.

Next he added the Jelly baby and within seconds a big ball of light came rushing out of the test tube. The sounds of screaming became apparent when the jelly baby was set alight. The chemical reaction of sugar, gelatine etc mixing with molten potassium was such that an a life like scream filled the science lab.

Perhaps not the greatest scientific break through ever, but fun none the less.
