Haiti Donation Appeal

Thursday, January 21, 2010 by blog

An earthquake on the scale of 7.3 hit Haiti followed by another two which have left a trail of destruction, devastation and a desperate call for your help.

Working together with the Red Cross, we are asking you to help Haiti and its people regain some sort of stability as soon as possible. With a huge call out for medical services, food and water, every penny counts.

If you feel you can donate in any way, then please head down to Bournville’s Student Union (room BG19) or you can do it yourself online at http://www.redcross.org.uk/emergencysite/default.aspx?id=88916. Please make sure it is a safe and trusted website if you are donating online.

Remember, with your help, the people of Haiti can regain some sort of stability much sooner. If you have any ideas as to how else we can help then please reply to this blog with your ideas.

At Bournville, the impact that this earthquake has had is felt among the students and staff and we want to work as hard as possible to make sure that the victims of the earthquake have a better chance at survival, and the opportunity to move on with their lives.

Don't Stress Out This Christmas

Tuesday, December 15, 2009 by blog

It’s that time of year when exams are approaching and so are those awful deadlines! Don’t forget, it is also Christmas – a time for you to relax. If you are struggling to find a balance between working hard and also having fun, then this blog will come to use to you.

At Bournville, we know how stressful it can be (we have many students after all), and we just want to give you some tips on how to relax this holiday.

Firstly, remember that it is Christmas.

Secondly, remember that if you work hard you get to play hard. Try to devise a revision timetable, or “study days”, making sure you have some time-out for Christmas TV or a day out with your friends.

A good tip is if you are revising, don’t revise stuff you already know. It may make you feel good, but it’s boring and you don’t need to do it. Revise the stuff you don’t know and save time.

For those with coursework, set study days and make sure you keep to the targets. Try to do a paragraph a day - this breaks it up and it doesn’t swamp you over Christmas.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all, from Bournville College!

Amazing Fundraising

Monday, November 30, 2009 by blog

The week before last was Children In Need with the whole of the nation fundraising in order to collect money for children and teenagers who are in desperate need of support. Bournville College has raised a staggering £917.12 with lots more to be still collected! Well done to everyone who was raising funds on the day and thanks to all for their donations.

Another charity event – World AIDS Day, is coming up on 1st December. This charity concentrates on raising funds to support those who have contracted HIV/AIDS. It also carries out research into finding a cure for those whose lives have been devastated by the disease. Bournville College is selling the traditional Red Ribbons for £1 each, and you can buy them from BG19.

Remember this is for a great cause, so please don't hold back! Being a culturally diverse college, we are dedicated to raising funds for charities and making sure every person has the same opportunities in life. Bournville College is united to make every life an equal one.

Do you want to be a star of the new TMobile advert?

Thursday, November 12, 2009 by blog

TMobile will be filming its next advert at the Birmingham Bull Ring this Saturday between 11am – 3pm. The advert will feature Josh Ward, who was stopped in the street recently and asked what he would do with unlimited texts. He said he would try and create a superband with as many people contributing as possible from lots of different musical backgrounds. Using his texts, Josh has built up an increasing base of band members of people from all over the UK.

Last week Josh and some of his band members wrote a song. This song has been uploaded to his myspace page, along with the lyrics and the chords for everyone to learn, and now Josh plans to take that song on tour to meet and jam with his band members around the UK. It is not essential to learn the song beforehand, it’s a simple song and can easily be picked up on the day.

On Saturday 14th November at the Birmingham Bull Ring, from 11am – 3pm the plan is to have Josh and as many of his Midland based band members gathered together in one place all jamming and singing along. The event is being filmed for the advert itself but also for an online documentary.

Can you afford to miss it? Will you be there? Let us know how you got on.

Remembrance Day

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 by blog

Remembrance Sunday, 8th November 2009 was a solemn day for the nation and for Great Britain as we remember those who have fallen and those who continue to be victims of war and loss.

Across England, there were ceremonies to commemorate the soldiers who have died in the wars in the past and the war which is still on going against the Taliban over in the middle East. A sad day for those who have lost their husbands, sons, uncles, dads, grandfathers and friends. A sad day for the civilians of the UK who witness the names listed upon the news, and with no end in sight.

What did you do for Remembrance Day? What did you do when the clock struck 11? What do you think about when the United Kingdom unites in mourning and consolidation?

Here at Bournville, tutorial groups and classrooms have been filled with the idea of Remembrance Day, and we are dedicated to keeping the nature of this day alive. If anyone has been specifically affected by the war, then you can seek support from the college counsellors, but most importantly Bournville is a united community of people who can support you throughout your hour of need.

Remembrance Day...we shall never forget.

Your Loved One lives in Your Heart
Many tender memories soften your grief,
May fond recollection bring you relief,
And may you find comfort and peace in the thought
Of the joy that knowing your loved one brought...

For time and space can never divide
Or keep your loved one from your side
When memory paints in colors true
The happy hours that belonged to you.
~ Helen Steiner Rice ~
