Supporting & Delivering Functional Mathematics in the Vocational Curriculum
Duration
Delivery will be through 5 full day sessions. The first 4 of these are compulsory attendance.
Introduction
This 30 hour (HE level 1, 10 credits) Programme of Study is designed to provide vocational staff in the Lifelong Learning Sector with the underpinning knowledge and skills to be able to plan and deliver Functional Mathematics to vocational learners. It is suitable for vocational teachers who wish to deliver Functional Mathematics, and for those who wish to gain formal accreditation.
Content
The programme of study will focus on the following:
1: Knowledge of the requirements for skill development and assessment of Functional Mathematics from Entry level to level 2, standards, assessment and barriers to learning numeracy and maths.
2. Embedding Functional Mathematics: how vocational staff can promote opportunities to develop skills and support Functional Mathematics in the vocational curriculum
3. Supporting Numeracy: strategies and resources to support the development of numeracy skills from Entry to Level 2 through a problem solving approach
4. Assessing Functional Mathematics: knowledge of assessment processes and a clear understanding of the standardisation process
5. Supporting learners with particular numeracy problems: strategies and resources to support dyslexic and second language students
6: Project – development of a practical Functional Skills project within a specified curriculum area; presentation of projects to peers; CPD and the IfL Reflect tool; progression
Teaching Methods
The course will be delivered through discrete taught input, group work and independent study using on line resources.
Assessment
Assessment of knowledge and competence is gathered by completion of a summative Functional Skills 2,000 word project.
A course handbook will be provided for each candidate, outlining assessment and course administration requirements.
Qualification Gained
Supporting & Delivering Functional Mathematics in the Vocational Curriculum Certificate (10 HE credits)
Opportunities for Progression
The 10 credits can be used as prior achievement towards further HE qualifications.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should ideally have a level 3 Maths qualification or be able to demonstrate this level of competence through an initial assessment of skills.
