Beauty Therapy Techniques – Level 3 Diploma

Duration

Beauty Therapy Techniques runs for 13 hours per week for 36 weeks, including tutorial, Level 2 Certificate in Retail, Level 1 Certificate in Personal and Social Development.  Students will be expected to attend one late evening and participate in one week voluntary work experience.

Introduction

Beauty Therapy Techniques will provide you with the skills and the knowledge to carry out beauty treatments to a high professional standard and prepare you for work within the industry.

This course is taught at our Longbridge campus, based in Birmingham. Due to the location of the campus the college can boast great transport links with, Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Stratford Upon Avon, Solihull and other surrounding areas.

Content

During Beauty Therapy Techniques you will cover the following units:

  • Working with colleagues within the industry
  • Health and safety
  • Client care
  • Promote additional products and services
  • Body massage
  • Facial electrotherapy
  • Body electrotherapy
  • Massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils
  • Provide self-tanning
  • Micro-dermabrasion

Level 2 Certificate in Retail (Beauty)
This is a vocationally related qualification that focuses on the development of the knowledge and understanding required to prepare you for a career in the retail industry.

You will develop understanding of the business of retail, the retail selling process, maintaining health, safety and security, customer service, visual merchandising, retail consumer law, security and loss prevention. It will also provide you with the skills to work individually and in a team to improve the effectiveness of a retail business.

You will also develop an understanding of the retail of skincare products as part of this qualification.

Level 1 Certificate in Personal and Social Development
This qualification will improve your personal and social development skills and will provide you with the confidence and self- esteem to enter the world of work. Units you will include are self development, Individual rights and responsibilities and preparation for work.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a compulsory part of all Sixth Form Centre courses.  Students set targets to improve their skills and gain qualifications, in English, Maths and/or IT. The Functional Skills and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results.  There is a particular emphasis on skills required for Beauty Therapy studies. Students build up a folder of evidence from their vocational work and may be required to sit one or more tests. For those students that achieved a grade D in maths and or English will be expected to attend lessons and re-sit their GCSE to enable them to achieve a grade C.

Teaching Methods

You will be taught practical skills in our state-of-the-art Urban Serenity salon by highly experienced therapist/tutors. You will observe demonstrations as well as practice your skills. Your underpinning knowledge will be taught through lectures, group discussions, activities and role plays.

Assessment

Your practical skills will be assessed in a realistic working environment of our commercial salon Urban Serenity. Your underpinning knowledge will be assessed by examinations/assignments.

Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Techniques
Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy
Level 1 Certificate in Personal and Social Development

Opportunities for Progression

Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to apply for our Foundation Degree in Salon Business Management, offered in partnership with University College Birmingham. Alternatively, you can apply to other universities offering diplomas and degree courses in Beauty Therapy in Salon Business Management and other related areas.

Entry Requirements

Grade D or above GCSE in English and Maths or equivalent. Level 2 Beauty Therapy.

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS

From April 2013, anyone aged 24+ and starting a course on or after 1 August 2013 may apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.  The loans are designed to help you pay your tuition fees and are available to all UK nationals* studying at Level 3 or Level 4 or an Advanced or Higher Apprenticeship.  It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 a year. If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you progress to complete a Higher Education programme, you will not have to pay back your 24+ loan!
