English for Literacy & Language Teaching – Level 3 Award
Duration
English for Literacy & Language Teaching runs for 20 weeks, 3 hours per week.
Introduction
This course is aimed at teachers who would like to develop their English skills to help with teaching. This qualification provides you with knowledge and skills to teach or embed Functional Skills English, literacy and language, as well as support students with needs in these areas.
English for Literacy & Language Teaching is taught at our Longbridge campus based near Birmingham. The campus has great transport links with; Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Solihull, Warwick, Redditch and other surrounding areas.
Content
You will explore English knowledge and skills in the following areas for your own personal development and for your teaching:
- English knowledge – the relationship between language forms and meaning
- Reading skills – previewing, predicting, skimming and scanning
- Speaking and listening skills – presentations and discussions
- Writing skills – developing academic writing, grammar and spelling
Teaching Methods
As a learner on this programme you will encounter a number of different learning strategies including:
- pair and small group work
- whole group work
- presentations
- individual and group research projects
- case studies
- e-learning
- one-to-one tutorial
Assessment
There are four units related to the contents above. Assessment tasks include essays, research, analysis of texts and presentations. There are NO observations of your teaching practice. The majority of the assessment tasks will be completed outside the classroom.
Qualification Gained
Level 3 Award in English for Literacy and Language Teaching.
Opportunities for Progression
You could progress onto a teaching qualification (PTLLS, CTLLS, DTLLS) or, if you have DTLLS (or equivalent), progress onto Level 5 Diploma Teaching English: Literacy &/or ESOL.
Entry Requirements
You must have reading and writing skills at level 2 e.g. English GCSE A*-C or Literacy Level 2.
