Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up
Duration
The course will run for 12 hours per week over 36 weeks. Students will be expected to attend one evening during the week.
Introduction
This qualification has been specifically designed to enable you to learn both aspects of hairdressing and media make-up. It will provide you with the skills and techniques to enable you to provide services to a high level of occupational ability.
Content
The units that you will cover in this qualification are:
- The art of hairdressing
- The art of photographic make-up
- Apply make-up
- Client care
- Health and safety
- Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
- Body art design
- Themed face painting
- Colour and lighten the hair
- The art of colouring hair
- Apply skin tanning techniques
Functional Skills
Functional Skills are a compulsory part of all Sixth Form Centre courses. Students set targets to improve their skills and gain qualifications, in English, Maths and/or IT. The Functional Skills and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results. There is a particular emphasis on skills required for Hair and Media Make-up. Students build up a folder of evidence from their vocational work and may be required to sit one or more tests.
Teaching Methods
You will be taught practical skills in state-of-the art hair and beauty salons (Urban Elegance & Urban Serenity) based at Bournville College, by experienced tutors. Theory sessions will be delivered through lectures, group activities, group discussions and role plays.
Assessment
You will be assessed performing practical assessments that will be ongoing throughout the year. Your underpinning knowledge will be assessed via exam and assignments.

Entry Requirements
GCSE Grade D or above in English and one other subject. Art would be an advantage.
