ESOL Skills for Life – Level 1 Certificate Personal Social Development

Duration

This is a full time course delivered over one academic year.

Introduction

The ESOL Skills for Life, entry level course will introduce students with English as a second language to studying in English and will develop their skills in Maths, English and Personal Social Development.

ESOL Skills for Life is taught from our campus in Longbridge, which is easily accessible by several key transport routes, including; Birmingham, Coventry, Warwick, Sutton Coldfield, Stratford Upon Avon and Solihull. 

Content

The ESOL Skills for Life course will focus on the skills needed for work and studying in English. You will learn practical, personal and social skills.

As part of a foundation learning programme you will also have to work towards your functional skills.

All elements of the course are mandatory. You will be expected to participate in all elements including functional skills.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a compulsory part of all Sixth Form Centre courses. Students set targets to improve their skills, and gain qualifications, in English and Maths. The Functional Skills levels taken are based on initial assessments.

Teaching Methods

Whilst studying ESOL Skills for Life you will learn through completing projects and tasks set by your tutor. You will also have the opportunity to learn from outdoor activities and team work exercises.

Assessment

You will build a portfolio of work which will be marked against the qualification criteria. You will be marked on how you have used your skills to complete tasks and activities set by your tutor.

To pass your functional skills you will have to sit a timed assessment.

Entry Level 3 Certificate in Skills for Life (ESOL)
Level 1 Certificate in Personal Social Development
Functional Skills in Maths

Opportunities for Progression

This qualification will give you the opportunity to progress onto a range of Level 1 programmes including Level 1 BTEC qualifications and Level 1 NOCN in Progression. It will also provide you with the skills to begin employment in a range of jobs.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will be assessed for Maths and English Skills on enrolling to make sure you are on a course that meets your learning needs.
