BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT & Games Development

Duration

This is a full-time two-year course 15 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Introduction

This course is aimed at students wishing to follow a career in the computer games industry.  You will study a general IT qualification as well as a specialist creative media course in games development.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a compulsory part of all Sixth Form Centre courses.  Students set targets to improve their skills, and gain qualifications, in English, Maths and/or IT. The Functional Skills and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results.  There is a particular emphasis on skills required for IT. Students build up a folder of evidence from their vocational work and may be required to sit one or more tests.

Assessment

A grade scale of pass, merit and distinction is applied to all units.  All units will be internally assessed through portfolio evidence.

Qualification Gained

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Creative Media Production (Games Development).

Opportunities for Progression

Successful completion of year 1 will allow you to move onto year 2 or consider employment in areas involving the use of IT.  Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to apply for our HND in Applied Computing.

Entry Requirements

Students will be considered depending upon qualifications, experience and interview.  Typically you will have one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including GCSE Grade C or above in maths and English
  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT (Merit) or an equivalent IT qualification is desirable
  • Evidence of creativity which could include artwork or computer generated designs
  • However, if you do not have any IT qualifications you will be required to successfully complete an IT test at enrolment

For International Students, Secure English Language Test at B2 level, such as IELTS level 5.5 or equivalent.

All students will also be required to attend and satisfactorily complete a formal induction period.

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS

From April 2013, anyone aged 24+ and starting a course on or after 1 August 2013 may apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.  The loans are designed to help you pay your tuition fees and are available to all UK nationals* studying at Level 3 or Level 4 or an Advanced or Higher Apprenticeship.  It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 a year. If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you progress to complete a Higher Education programme, you will not have to pay back your 24+ loan!
