BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design
Duration
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design is a two year programme up to 5 days per week.
Introduction
The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design is a practical, work related course. Students produce work which investigates and develops both their creativity and theoretical knowledge of art & design.
At the end of the second year students produce both a portfolio of their practical art & design project work and a final exhibition showcasing their work.
Content
18 units in total
5 core units
3 final major project (externally assessed)
10 specialist units including
Photography, craft, painting, textiles, printmaking, digital and interactive arts and design
Functional Skills
Functional Skills are a compulsory part of all Sixth Form Centre courses. Students set targets to improve their skills, and gain qualifications, in English, Maths and/or IT. The Functional Skills and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results. There is a particular emphasis on skills required for Art & Design. Students build up a folder of evidence from their vocational work and may be required to sit one or more tests.
Teaching Methods
Students develop their skills through practical sessions, demonstrations, workshops, lectures, one- to-one personal tutorials and portfolio development.
Assessment
A grade scale of Pass, Merit and Distinction is applied to all units.
Students put together a portfolio for all units. Three of these units are externally assessed in the form of the final major project.
Qualification Gained
On successful completion of the programme students will be awarded a qualification equivalent to 3 A Levels.
Opportunities for Progression
On successful completion of the programme students can progress onto higher education courses within various aspects of Art & Design, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas are also valued by employers.
Entry Requirements
- Merit or Distinction at BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design
- At least 4 GCSEs grade A – C including Art or Art & Design subject
- Students will need to attend an interview with examples of their art work
- All applicants must have a good reference
- Applications from mature students are welcome
For International Students, Secure English Language Test at B2 level, such as IELTS level 5.5 or equivalent.
24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS
From April 2013, anyone aged 24+ and starting a course on or after 1 August 2013 may apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. The loans are designed to help you pay your tuition fees and are available to all UK nationals* studying at Level 3 or Level 4 or an Advanced or Higher Apprenticeship. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 a year. If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you progress to complete a Higher Education programme, you will not have to pay back your 24+ loan!
