Introduction

Asbestos is widely accepted as one of the biggest killers in the UK. It is now recognised that as many as 18 million UK workers are at risk of contact with asbestos fibres. The most up to date information states that 4000 people per year are dying of this disease. The Asbestos Awareness Training Short Course can be delivered on-site at our campus in Longbridge, Birmingham or at any organisation in the West Midlands.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The course is targeted at all those likely to be involved with asbestos - either in a property management sense or for those trades likely to work directly or indirectly with materials that could be asbestos.

Asbestos Awareness Training is taught from our campus in Longbridge, due the location of the campus the following areas have strong public transport links; Birmingham, Warwick, Solihull, Stratford Upon Avon, Coventry, Sutton Coldfield.

Content

The Asbestos Awareness Training course is designed specifically to provide both knowledge and awareness of:

What is asbestos - a description will be given about what asbestos is, the varying types and the history of its uses.

Health effects - a discussion of the negative impact upon the lungs (lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques, pulmonary function impairment) and other organs, gastrointestinal tract, etc.

Where asbestos is found - particular emphasis will be given to the types of environment in which asbestos is found and where it will be discovered by the variety of building trades. Lots of pictures will be used as examples to ensure delegates have the best opportunity of being able to relate to the various situations.

Risk assessment - identifying hazards and risks in the typical workplaces where asbestos is likely to be found.

Principles of control - understanding some simple strategies for controlling hazards and reducing risks.

What the law says - having an understanding of what the law says about the use, removal and disposal of asbestos.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Improved competence, allowing proactive measures to be made in terms of current and future compliance.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are a compulsory part of all Sixth Form Centre courses. Students set targets to improve their skills and gain qualifications, in English, Maths and/or IT. The Functional Skills and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results. There is a particular emphasis on skills required for Asbestos Awareness Training. Students build up a folder of evidence from their vocational work and may be required to sit one or more tests.

Qualification Gained

College certificate of attendance.

Entry Requirements

The Asbestos Awareness Training has no formal entry requirements.

COURSE FEES

£60 per delegate

There is no fee remission on short courses and workshops
