17 year old Bryn Harris studying at Bournville College stood out from the crowd when he claimed victory at the regional heat of the Guild of Bricklayers competition at junior level, held at Stratford Upon Avon College.

Bryn who is currently studying the Construction Diploma – Brickwork Level 2 has won a trophy after showcasing his bricklaying skills at this renowned competition. Despite challenging opposition from competitors representing many other colleges in the West Midlands his work was judged to the best decorative wall and diaper pattern. He commented: ‘Winning the competition means the world to me. Who would have thought that I was going to leave with the trophy?’

Bryn’s tutor Stephen Knight commented on his success: ‘Bryn has done exceptionally well during his time at Bournville College. With guidance from our skilled tutors and outstanding learning facilities available at our new campus, his skills have grown from strength to strength. As a result, I had no hesitation to put him forward for the competition and it comes as no surprise that he secured first place.’

Bryn, a former pupil of Colmers School admits that his strength lies in being practical: ‘I chose to study bricklaying because it allows me to apply myself practically as well as creatively. Facilities at the new Bournville College are amazing which means that I was able to learn and excel my skills in an industry standard environment. Besides winning the competition, I’ve also managed to secure employment with a local bricklaying firm which will enable me to continue developing my skills in the industry that I love.’

Bournville College offers a variety of courses in bricklaying, ranging from the Introduction Level to Level 3. If you’re leaving school soon and thinking about learning skills of this trade, why not visit Bournville College during its upcoming Open Day on Saturday 16th June 2012, 10am – 2pm.
