Sally’s career goes from strength to strength

Sally-Powell

Sally Powell from Northfield flourished her skills as well as a career at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) after undertaking an AMSPAR course at Bournville College.

Sally (29) who joined Birmingham Children’s Hospital in 2008 as a Ward Clerk on the Intensive Care Unit has always dreamed of developing her skills and career in the field of care. When she enrolled on a minute taking course at Bournville College in 2008 she had never thought that it would also lead to an unexpected career progression.

When Sally completed her former course, she was encouraged by her tutors to continue her learning journey on the Level 3 Diploma for Medical Secretaries (Amspar). Unexpectedly, half way through her course, an internal vacancy of a PA to the Specialist Play Services came up and Sally decided she had nothing to lose by applying. Despite the fact that the job required a much higher skills set than she was using at the time, she would not let that discourage her.

The course paid its benefit when she discovered that the interview referred to the same material she had learnt on the course. As a result, it came as no surprise that she was offered the job, progressing two bands on her salary scale too. Sally reflected: ‘I couldn’t believe that what I learnt on the course was so closely relevant to the job I was applying for’.

Sally’s been in her current role for two years and she thoroughly enjoys the variety of tasks that come with it. Overall, she supports nineteen members of staff based in her department which requires a high level of medical admin skills. She added: ‘I don’t think I’d have done it without the course or even have the confidence to apply for the job role’.

Sally’s manager, Nadine Gianfagna, Acting Head Of Specialist Play Services commented: ‘With Sally’s excellent skills and knowledge gained from the course she has the potential to go far in the NHS and we are grateful for all her support of the Specialist Play Service at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.’

Learning is now Sally’s middle name as she’s considering applying for the Diploma in Primary Care Management (Level 5). Having made a great network of friends with the same professional background at Bournville College, Sally’s confident that she is ready to tackle a new challenge.

‘I’d recommend studying at Bournville College. My tutor Jo Saunders was excellent and unsurprisingly we became friends for life. With support from Jo and the College itself I managed to complete my studies whilst working’, added Sally.
